Yellow Springs, Ohio –Antioch University Midwest (AUM) and the native New Zealand nation of Waitaha (Waitaha) continue their 2016 Victory for Humanity Event Series with two February workshops. The workshops focus on understanding the societal issue of justice from a community and individual perspective. The first workshop, Restorative Justice will be held on Wednesday, February 10 from 7-9 pm, and is followed by Assessing the Self on Wednesday, February 17 from 7-9 pm. Both workshops are held at AUM in Room B105, 900 Dayton Street in Yellow Springs.
“We are excited to host the second in the series of the Victory for Humanity workshops, given that the subject matter really aligns with our mission, teachings and student experiential work” said Dr. Michele Nobel, director of AUM’s Education and Interdisciplinary Studies Division.
Focused on understanding the societal issue of justice from multiple perspectives, the workshop consists of two separate sessions and focuses on how the concepts represented within the “legal” system and those one might expect as part of a “justice” system can be very different in our society. The Restorative Justice session will examine restorative alternatives to righting wrongs, mending injury, and creating balance and wholeness. The Assessing the Self session will examine notions of individual accountability and “making right” and how they can result in expanded views of justice with regard to fairness and equity for all parties.
The workshops are facilitated by Dr. Wendy Peters, AUM adjunct faculty member and an author, researcher and consultant who specializes in human and cultural development. Raymond TeKorako Ruka, a Waitaha priest, Maori elder with insights into the process of change, and Stephen Powers, AUM adjunct faculty member and COO at TheNETT, Ltd., will also lead portions of the workshops. The Victory for Humanity Event Series is inspired by Antioch University’s mantra, an adage by educational reformer Horace Mann: Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity.
