Antioch University Midwest and McGregor alumni and staff gathered at the Carillon Historical Park on Thursday evening, February 16. The nice weather and unseasonably warm winter in February likely contributed to an increased turnout, as alumni came together for conversation and community. It was a “refreshing” atmosphere for attendees at they arrived at the Carillon Brewing Company and stepped back into time with wooden barrels and copper kettles billowing steam. High “spirits” abounded while enjoying good food and brews during great conversation. The event started with introductions of familiar faces and first time attendees.
Brewmaster assistant, Dan Lauro, gave an oral history of craft beer in Dayton along with the various foods that immigrants from Europe brought with them that helped shape the brewing industry in America. Simple brewing ingredients, made the old fashioned way, involved patience and time to create a bold, robust beer flavors. The menu at Carillon Brewing Company was another way for guests to experience the life of early immigrants, indicative of the hard simple life in a turn of the century Dayton era. These early American appetizers included potato wedges, sauerkraut and sausage balls, and trays of meat and cheese made from wurst and smoked sausages.
At the end of the event door prizes of AUM apparel and logo items were given away. Rosemary Naulty, AUM’s Alumni Relations manager, was presented with azaleas and a gift certificate to dinner and a movie as a gift of appreciation for her service to the alumni community over last two years. Rosemary is retiring and moving to Michigan in March with her husband, Jeff Johnson (who is also an alumnus). She will be greatly missed, but her enthusiasm and creativity will endure! Brice Thomas, Alumni Relations manager for Antioch University, will fill her place. We wish Rosemary and Jeff a good journey and much success in their new adventure.
The next Alumni 3rd Thursday is scheduled for March 16 at the Dayton Racquet Club from 6-8 pm. Come ready to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day…a day early!
