Event to showcase conversation with dyslexia advocates, teachers and to highlight importance of AUM’s Dyslexia Certificate program, accredited by the International Dyslexia Association

Antioch University Midwest (AUM), which offers one of only 17 dyslexia certificate programs in the United States accredited by the International Dyslexia Association, is recognizing Dyslexia Awareness Month by hosting a film screening and conversation with local dyslexia advocates on Thursday, October 29 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The Spotlight on Dyslexia event will take place at AUM’s campus at 900 Dayton Street in Yellow Springs.

“We hope the event will build awareness around dyslexia, which we know affects one in five children in our schools around the country,” said Genya Devoe, who developed AUM’s Dyslexia Certificate program and is a member of the teaching faculty at AUM’s School of Education. “Teachers and parents everywhere need access to the tools and techniques to help students with dyslexia achieve their full potential as students and future leaders.”

Spotlight on DyslexiaThe event will feature a screening of The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia, a 2012 film that provides personal and uplifting accounts of the dyslexic experience from children, experts, and iconic leaders, such as Sir Richard Branson and financier Charles Schwab. The film addresses misconceptions about dyslexia and paints a picture of hope for all who struggle with it. Following the screening will be a conversation with educators and advocates, along with the kickoff of AUM’s holiday book drive which benefits the Dayton chapter of Project Read.

AUM’s newly-launched online option for its Dyslexia Certificate program is designed for teachers, parents, and advocates as well as students pursuing education or related degrees. The program is offered as a stand-alone certificate or as a professional concentration for students pursuing a Master of Education in Educational Leadership. The first online offering began October 12 and is designed to meet the needs of K-12 classroom educators.
